Owner-Requested Euthanasia

Deciding to put a pet to sleep can be a emotionally-challenging decision. It can also pose a finacial burden. The Maryland SPCA offers low-cost owner-requested euthanasia for pets that are suffering from serious illness or injury, for $40 per pet for cats and exotic animals and $50 per dog to low-income owners. The fee helps cover a portion of the cost of the service and is meant to help people afford quality care and support during a difficult time. In order to qualify for the low-cost program offered by the MD SPCA, you must be a cat or dog owner earning less than $25,000 annually or a household earning less than $42,000 a year. Proof of income is required and can be based on last year's income tax form, Social Security Disability, all W-2 forms for the family, Section 8, Free Lunch, Food Stamps, VA Disability, AFDC, WIC or Pay Stub.

The Maryland SPCA also offers owner-requested euthanasia services to cat and dog owners exceeding the income requirement. For these individuals, the fee is $125 per pet for cats and exotic animals and $150 per dog. The fee covers the full cost of the service. Pet owners who wish to be present for the owner-requested euthanasia procedure should contact the Maryland SPCA Wellness Clinic.
